Sixth Form Christmas Visit to Nursing Home

Southwark Music Service Nursing Tours

In December 2016, 11 of Southwark’s most talented young musicians, including some Kingsdale Sixth Form students, toured local nursing homes with violins, guitars, saxophones, percussion, a cello, trumpets and a clarinet. They performed an eclectic programme including Three Little Birds (Bob Marley), London is the Place For Me (Lord Kitchener),The Firebird’s Finale (Stravinsky), and the best-loved Que Sera (Doris Day).

They were very well received by the residents, many of whom danced  and sang along - one gentleman started doing air guitar on his walking stick!

Southwark Music Service hope that the tour will show the next generation of musicians the positive impact they can make with their talents and inspire them to use their music in the community for years to come.

“It [performing for nursing home residents] was a brand new experience for me. I’ve never felt a connection between me and an audience member so strongly before. Usually when performing I can see members of the audience enjoying the music but I felt like when I performed here, they weren’t just enjoying the music but also enjoying our presence more than a normal audience would... It was a truly unique experience.’”
