The Mathematics Department at Kingsdale comprises a large team of subject specialists and ten dedicated mathematics classrooms. Having trialled and evaluated a mastery approach to teaching mathematics, we have decided to adopt a pedagogy based on Professor Barak Rosenshine’s research relating to the characteristics of effective teaching and learning. We feel this approach is better suited to meet the needs of our talented young students, many of whom will have been working at greater depth in mathematics from Key Stage 2.
Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. Mathematics is a universal language and essential to understanding the world around us. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology, and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
