Classical Civilisation

Classical Civilisation (commonly known as ‘Classics’) focuses on the study of the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome. It is taught from Year 9 and is available as an option at both GCSE and A Level. We look at written sources, stories, images, and artefacts to understand the lives and culture of the people living in ancient Greece and Rome. Studying Classics offers pupils the chance to learn many different subjects in one setting, the ancient world. These include history, mythology, religion, drama, geography, sociology, politics, art and architecture. You don’t need to know any ancient languages, all the texts studied are in English, and it doesn’t matter if you haven’t studied the Greeks and Romans since primary school; all you need is an interest in the Ancient World and its cultures.

A variety of trips support pupils in their learning, including an annual KS4 visit to Rome and trips to the British Museum and the theatre.
